SOCIETà SEGRETA DEGLI SPEZIALI

Mediterranean Spirits

There was a time when the secrets
of medical plants and spices were guarded by apothecaries and pharmacists, who shared them with the herbalists, monks and alchemists of the forests and highlands of north-eastern Sicily.

The art of distilling and the wisdom of the ancients, kept alive until now by the Società Segreta degli Speziali, re-emerges today after being hidden for centuries.

AN EXTRAORDINARILY UNIQUE LAND

The Nebrodi mountain range is the heart of the ancient Valdemone region, a territory in Byzantine Sicily, together with Val di Noto and Valle di Mazara. Its rugged hills, steep cliffs, and peaks of up to 1,800 meters dominate the region, gazing northward to the sea, all the way to the Aeolian Islands, and brushing to the south-east against the foothills of Mount Etna.

The Nebrodi mountains preserve the deepest authenticity of all of Sicily, and have for time immemorial been the cradle of botanical and philosophical ancient wisdom, handed down to us by Società Segreta degli Speziali.

When the spring sun sets over the island, the air fills with the scent of orange blossom, the citrus flower. Sweet and alluring, it tinges Sicilian nights with its unmistakable note.

Of all salts, Mothia’s excels for its purity and quality. Made unique by the microclimate of the lagoons facing the island of the same name, just north of Marsala, this salt is to this day collected by hand, just like it was in the beginning, during the time of the Phoenicians.

Sicilian almonds capture the energy of the sun, giving them a taste that is unmatched across the Mediterranean.
